The Annual Charles B. Nam Lecture in the Sociology of Population, hosted by the Center for Demography and Population Health (CDPH) on Friday, March 21, brought students and faculty together to hear from David F. Warner, Ph.D., a professor of sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Warner discussed the topic “Disparities in Epilepsy among U.S. Older Adults: New Data and New Directions in Incidence-based Studies.”
Dr. Warner’s research has centered around examining the intersection of health, families, and aging. He has also researched the development and consequences of multimorbidity, or the co-occurrence of chronic health conditions, functional limitations, and other age-related conditions outside the traditional disease models.
Dr. Warner also serves as the co-editor-in-chief for the Population Research and Policy Review as well as an associate editor for the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.
Attendees included CDPH students, faculty, and staff, including Professor Emeritus Charles Nam, Ph.D., CDPH founder and former director, who the lecture is named after, and Professor Emeritus Elwood “Woody” Carlson, Ph.D., former CDPH director and creator of the annual lecture series.
Dr. Carlson established the lecture in 2003 to recognize Dr. Nam’s significant contributions to the center, the college, and the field of demography. Since then, there have been twenty lectures with leading demographers and academics from schools such as Cornell University, Princeton University, and the University of California at Los Angeles.
To this day the lecturer’s namesake, Dr. Nam, continues to be involved with the center through his ongoing research and support for the Charles B. Nam Scholarship award and the Charles B. Nam Professorship, as well as his attendance at events like this one.
The most recipient of the Charles B. Nam Scholarship and the Serow Prize, Nathan Gebert, was in attendance and had an opportunity to connect with Dr. Nam.
“What I learned from Dr. Warner’s lecture on epilepsy among older adults, using Medicare data, is that significant disparities exist between groups, highlighting an ongoing public health issue I hadn’t previously considered. Afterward, Dr. Warner shared insights into the journal review process as Editor-in-Chief of Population Research & Policy Review, which was incredibly valuable,” MSD student Nathan Gebert said, reflecting on the lecture.
In addition to the Charles B. Nam Annual Lecture in the Sociology of Population, CDPH hosts a number of Brown Bag Seminars each year to share knowledge about demography research at FSU and beyond. The Brown Bag series offers the opportunity to hear from distinguished guest lecturers in a casual setting.
