Julia Neres, Lily Flannigan, and Eileen Byrne took SYD 3020: Pop & Society taught by Mathew Hauer, Ph.D. – Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Assistant Director for FSU’s Center for Demography and Population Health – in Spring 2023.

“There were 25 slots for undergraduates across the entire United States and three of my students won the travel award,” Dr. Hauer said. “I am so proud that my students were able to win very selective scholarships to further learn about demography and career opportunities in the field among other competitive and amazing undergrads.”

At the PAA Annual Meeting – a premier conference where demographers and social and health scientists at all career stages are afforded the opportunity to collaborate and network – students interacted with members including demographers, sociologists, economists, public health professionals, and other individuals interested in research and education in the population field.

Byrne, a third-year Public Health student minoring in Population Studies, said, “The travel scholarship provided an opportunity for me to meet and listen to people from all areas of demography.” Byrne continued, “Dr. Hauer’s course sparked a new career interest for me in this field. PAA was my very first conference and it was truly an inspiring experience.”

Dr. Hauer also applauded another student, Abigail Archie, from the same class that was selected for the NextGen Pop Undergraduate Program in Population Research. Both scholarships encourage the recipients to attend that year’s PAA Annual Meeting.
