Complete the Civic Literacy Assessment before August 6

This email was originally sent on July 15 to undergraduate students pursuing a degree or a primary major in COSSPP who were eligible for the Civic Literacy Assessment processed as described. Students who were not eligible to complete the assessment through Canvas did not receive this message.

Complete your Civic Literacy Assessment by August 6!

All undergraduate students who started at FSU after Summer 2018 must complete the State of Florida’s Civic Literacy requirement in order to earn their bachelor’s degree. Depending on when a student first entered FSU, the requirements as set by the Florida Legislature are different and may be more stringent, including changing requirements for an assessment and coursework.

The Civic Literacy requirement includes an assessment component fulfilled by the Florida Civic Literacy Test. Eligible students (students admitted to FSU prior to Fall 2024) may complete it online through Canvas if done by August 6.

Streamline graduation – complete the Assessment by August 6

Based on when you started at FSU, you are eligible to take the Florida Civic Literacy Test online directly within Canvas, anytime and unproctored, through August 6, 2025.

If you have not already completed the Civic Literacy assessment, we highly recommend you do so during the remaining three weeks of eligibility. Waiting to take the assessment until August 6 will require additional, less convenient steps, to meet graduation requirements.

To access the Canvas version of the test, log in to your Canvas Dashboard and access the “Florida Civic Literacy Test – 2024/2025” course.

If you fail to earn a satisfactory grade on the Canvas-based Florida Civic Literacy Test by August 6, 2025, you will have to take the in-person FCLE to meet the civic literacy requirement (see below).

What happens if you wait until August 6 or later?

If you fail to earn a satisfactory grade on the Canvas-based Florida Civic Literacy Test by August 6, 2025, you will have to take the FCLE in person, in a proctored environment, through the FSU Testing Center to meet the assessment requirement.

For TALLAHASSEE-AREA students
The FSU Testing Center administers the FCLE at no charge for FSU students

  1. Visit the FSU Testing Center website and review the FCLE Exam Guide.
  2. Schedule an exam appointment at least one week in advance, using the Exam Registration System.
Exam appointments are subject to availability at the time of scheduling and not guaranteed during peak testing periods such as during finals week.
  3. Review testing policies, including what to bring to your appointment.

For ALL OTHER students
You must email testing@fsu.edu for instructions on taking the FCLE with an approved proctor.

The FCLE is only offered through Florida institutions, so if you live outside Florida, Testing Center staff will help you identify other exams that will meet the assessment requirement.

Be prepared to do the following prior to testing with an off-campus provider:

  1. Schedule your exam directly with the proctor.
  2. Pay applicable proctoring fees.
  3. Complete a required, recorded video consent.

What if you completed this requirement at another institution?

Students who took their Civic Literacy exam at another institution may submit their score report using the how-to guide available through the FSU Service Center. Login with FSUID and password is required.
