Important Information: Undergraduate PAD Course Prefix Changes to DSC

Most of the undergraduate PAD (Public Administration) courses associated with the Emergency Management and Homeland Security program are in the process of transitioning to the DSC (Domestic Security) prefix.

These DSC courses will continue to be housed within the Emergency Management and Homeland Security program and will still count toward the “Public Administration” subfield or concentrations for students majoring in:

  • International Affairs, Interdisciplinary Social Science, Political Science, Emergency Management, and Intelligence Studies.
  • However, students should still confirm that the specific course appears on their major’s approved course list if their academic program requires coursework to be selected from a designated list of approved electives or concentration courses.

Students should expect the course titles to remain the same or experience only slight variations. However, the course prefix and course number will most likely change as part of this transition process. If your course has already changed from a PAD prefix to a DSC prefix, no additional action is needed and your course should continue to apply appropriately toward your academic requirements.

Please note that either the PAD or DSC version of a course will count toward degree requirements depending on which version the student completed. Students should carefully review their academic history and avoid repeating a DSC course if they have already completed the equivalent course under the PAD prefix after the course has been updated.

  • Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their COSSPP academic advisor if they have any questions to ensure they are not enrolling in a course they have previously completed under a different prefix.

Students should also be aware that Stellic and Academic Requirements Reports may not always immediately reflect course equivalencies or degree applicability accurately during this transition period, as university systems continue updating and processing these course changes.

  • For courses that are actively transitioning this summer, some students may notice temporary issues in Canvas, including course sites disappearing and reappearing. Please know that instructors are aware of these transition-related issues and are actively working with students who may be affected. The course content will not change in these courses.

Please also note that the transition of undergraduate PAD courses to DSC courses will continue throughout Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 as additional courses are updated. Additional information regarding PAD and DSC course updates can be found on the EMHS program site as they continue implementing these changes.

Students with questions specifically regarding course offerings or course transitions for the PAD/DSC course changes may contact: Chantelle Tuffigo, EMHS Academic Program Specialist at ctuffigo@em.fsu.edu.

For academic advising services, including major requirements, degree progress, approved coursework, and graduation requirements, students should continue to meet with their COSSPP Academic Advisor.
