This message was originally sent on July 18, 2025, to students with a primary major in COSSPP who has a to-do item flagged on their myFSU account to submit a Summer Enrollment Requirement waiver.
You are receiving this message because our records indicate that you have a Summer Requirement Waiver to-do list item on your myFSU account.
You must either complete and earn course credit hours during a Summer semester or you may petition for a waiver of this requirement.
Even if you think you completed the requirement this summer, read this email carefully. We recommend submitting a waiver petition in any case.
What is the Summer Enrollment (also known as Summer Residency) Requirement?
The State of Florida requires students to complete and earn at least 9 credit hours at a State University System institution during a Summer semester as part of their graduation requirements.
This applies to all students who start at a university in the State of Florida with fewer than sixty hours of credit since Fall 1976.
Courses taken at a state college or community college in Florida or at any private or out of state institution do not apply to this requirement.
You may petition to waive the Summer Enrollment Requirement.
If you ultimately do not take university classes during a Summer semester, we do not want this to impact your graduation.
If you are planning to take summer classes in the future, do NOT include this in your petition – it will be denied if you do. Summer plans may change, so submitting a waiver allows you additional flexibility with this requirement.
Log in to Student Center through myFSU. Go to My Tasks – the Summer Requirement Waiver will appear as a to-do item.
Acceptable justifications can be simple. Examples include:
- I am set to graduate before the next summer semester and do not want to delay earning my degree.
- I work during the summer to save money to cover tuition and cannot afford summer classes.
- I spend my summers as a primary caregiver for _____.
- I will be working an internship at _____ next summer.
- I am conducting undergraduate research at _____ in future summers.
- I am participating in a non-FSU study abroad program during a future summer.
- I will be participating in _____ training in future summers.
- Examples: ROTC, military, other professional
Why is the Summer Requirement to-do item on your account now?
After earning 79+ hours, a Summer Requirement Waiver to-do item appears on your account. Complete and submit the waiver for review. If approved by your college dean’s office and the Office of Faculty Development & Advancement, the requirement will be waived.
You must either complete summer hours or be approved for a summer waiver, or you will be unable to earn a degree.
Even if you plan to take summer classes in the future, please complete the waiver indicating why the requirement has not been met to this point.
