Alan Rowan Named Director of FSU’s Public Health Program

Alan Rowan, DrPh, has been named the new Director of the Public Health program for a three-year term.

Dr. Rowan specializes in epidemiology and diseases of environmental origin and has taught courses in Public Health Program at FSU since 2003. Most recently he served as the internship director for the program.

“I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Alan Rowan has agreed to serve as the next Director of the Public Health program,” said Tim Chapin, Ph.D., dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. “I am excited to see Dr. Rowan take on this role and know he shares the unit’s commitment to excellence, engaged faculty governance, and strategic investment in the unit.”

Dr. Rowan assumes the position from Amy Burdette, Ph.D., who has served as Director since 2021.

“Dr. Burdette has been an excellent advocate for the unit’s faculty, staff, and students, and worked with me to navigate broader university considerations as we established the Bachelor of Public Health (BSPH) program and ensured the continued excellence of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program,” Dean Chapin said. “I wish her the very best as she returns to the faculty and advances her world-class scholarship. Thank you, Dr. Burdette!”

During her time as Director, the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accredited the BSPH program in February, joining the MPH program. Under her leadership, Public Health became the fastest growing program at Florida State University.

“Being one of the faculty that started with the Master of Public Health program in 2003 and working with Dr. Amy Burdette and others to start the Bachelor of Public Health program in 2019, we have seen students recognize the importance of these degrees, and their enthusiasm reflects their awareness of public health’s impact,” Dr. Rowan said. “I look forward to continuing the tradition of the program, the College, and FSU, graduating excellent, trained students who can address the many issues of health both domestically and globally.”
