Alexandra Griffin – an FSU alumna (B.S. Political Science ’21 & Emergency Management and Homeland Security Program) and current Master of Public Administration student – was recognized twice by the Department of Defense for her outstanding work at the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM).
USSOUTHCOM is one of 11 Combatant Commands in the Department of Defense. It is responsible for providing contingency planning, operations, and security cooperation in its assigned Area of Responsibility of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Griffin was named Junior Civilian of the Year for 2023 by General Laura J. Richardson, Commander, USSOUTHCOM, and further was named Professional Federal Employee of the Year by the South Florida Federal Executive Board. This annual awards program recognizes Federal Employees from the South Florida Federal Community who have demonstrated outstanding work performance, exceptional community service, and/or heroic efforts.
“I have been really lucky to find a job that I thoroughly enjoy and find really exciting, thanks to the EMHS program at FSU,” Griffin said. “It’s really rewarding to think that the work my colleagues and I do has regular impacts to US National Security. These awards really make me grateful for those who have and continue to provide me mentorship in my career field.”
Griffin started her career at USSOUTHCOM as part of Florida State’s Emergency Management and Homeland Security internship program. She now works as a Strategic Planner in the Strategy, Policy, and Plans Directorate.
Griffin completed the Emergency Management and U.S. Intelligence Studies Undergraduate Certificates in Spring 2021 and will finish her Master of Public Administration in Summer 2025.
While at Florida State, Griffin was the Captain of the Huntseat Club Equestrian Team, Art Director of Clutch Magazine, and Secretary of the FSU chapter of the International Association of Emergency Managers.
When asked what advice she would give current FSU students, Griffin said, “Get involved with student organizations related to your interests, get to know your professors, and make a lot of friends. It is really important to have a good network to rely on when you enter the professional world. FSU is the perfect place to start.”
