Joey Arellano – FSU graduate (B.A. International Affairs ’15 and B.A. Editing, Writing & Media ’15) – is the Deputy Director of Communications for the Florida House of Representatives Office of the Minority Leader and recipient of FSU’s 2024 Reubin O’D. Askew Young Alumni Award.

Joey Arellano, a distinguished alumnus of Florida State University, graduated in December 2015 with dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in International Affairs and Editing, Writing, and Media. During his time at FSU, he also earned a certificate in Emergency Management and Homeland Security, demonstrating a commitment to public safety and emergency preparedness. His academic and extracurricular achievements highlight his dedication to fostering change and building stronger communities.
“My Bachelor of Arts degree in International Affairs equipped me with the foundational skills to think analytically and critically,” Arellano shared. “Paired with my degree in Editing, Writing, and Media, I’ve learned to communicate complex ideas effectively. These skills, combined with my leadership experiences, have been pivotal in my career and continue to shape the work I do today.”
Arellano’s FSU journey was defined by his leadership experiences. He founded the Mexican American Student Association (MASA) at FSU.
“I created a space where Mexican American students could feel seen, supported, and celebrated,” Arellano said. “Founding MASA wasn’t just about starting an organization — it was about building a community and a legacy for future MexiNoles at FSU and beyond.”
“Founding MASA was one of the most impactful experiences of my undergraduate career,” Arellano reflected. “It taught me the importance of sustainable leadership and empathy, which continue to guide my professional and personal endeavors.”
Beyond MASA, Arellano was deeply involved in campus life, serving in roles such as Vice President of the Multicultural Greek Council, Secretary of Sigma Lambda Beta, and External Public Relations Chair for the Chinese Language and Culture Association. His leadership across various organizations not only earned him numerous accolades but also equipped him with critical skills in collaboration, communication, and strategic planning.
Arellano’s professional journey is as inspiring as his time at FSU. In addition to winning FSU’s prestigious 2024 Reubin O’D. Askew Young Alumni Award, which highlighted his outstanding contributions to public service and communication, he was also named one of Florida’s “Great Communicators” by Influence Magazine and appointed to The Florida Bar’s Citizens Advisory Committee, where he serves as one of the youngest members and one of the few non-lawyers.
In addition, Arellano was honored with the Unsung Hero Award in 2022 for his significant contributions to the arts, corporate, health care, and nonprofit sectors.
When asked for advice for current students, Arellano emphasized the importance of humility, kindness, and hard work. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and remember that being in the room means you’re there for a reason,” he said. “You are the expert in something; trust in that and use it to make a difference.”
