Alumni Spotlight: Katherine Reid

Katherine Reid – a three-time COSSPP alumna (B.S. International Affairs ‘18; M.A. International Affairs ‘19; Ph.D. Public Administration and Policy ‘25) – guest lectured at the University of Sussex about incel violence for two of their graduate-level terrorism courses.

The University of Sussex is a globally recognized research university, ranking in the top 18% of the world’s higher education institutions. Founded in the 1960s, Sussex was the first of the new wave of United Kingdom universities to be granted a Royal Charter.

“I have had the chance to work with faculty who not only supported my research but also encouraged me to push myself intellectually and pursue new research questions driven by curiosity,” Reid said. “Their mentorship has played a vital role in shaping my growth as a scholar and researcher.”

After graduating in the Summer of 2025, Reid began a faculty position at the University of Texas at El Paso as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Security.

Before her graduation, Reid worked as Lab Manager for the Disaster Intelligence Analysis Lab within the Emergency Management and Homeland Security (EMHS) program at Florida State University. EMHS provides relevant, realistic, and exciting coursework in classic emergency management, unmanned aircraft systems, terrorism and counter-terrorism, and intelligence studies to over 1,200 students per semester.

Her research interests center on exploring how societies respond to terrorism, ranging from formal policy measures to more holistic approaches focused on disengagement and deradicalization.

“I chose to attend Florida State University because of the opportunity to participate in the First Year Abroad program in London,” Reid said. “It was an incredible experience that allowed me to begin my academic journey with a unique global perspective.”
