Madeleine Traylor – two-time FSU alumna (B.S. Sociology ‘24, B.S. Psychology ‘24) – is pursuing her Ph.D. in Sociology at The Ohio State University, crediting COSSPP faculty for her success.

Traylor focuses her research on the intersections of family, gender, and demography. Her academic work explores the complex dynamics of social structures and their impact on individual life courses and family units.
“Florida State just felt like home,” Traylor said. “For me, moving away for college during the pandemic, I knew I needed to go somewhere that felt safe and welcoming. It was also important for me to find a university that valued research. I did not know for sure if I wanted to go into a research field, but I wanted the option, and I was able to get that at FSU. The culture of Florida State stands out. The people, the faculty, and the staff go above and beyond to be kind and helpful.”
Traylor took a variety of classes in the Department of Sociology and credits her ability to engage with other scholars on diverse topics within the discipline to her comprehensive sociological education.
While at FSU, Traylor also held sociology research assistantships with Doug Schrock, Ph.D., and Deana Rohlinger, Ph.D. Both opportunities were recommended by Teresa Roach, Ph.D., who encouraged her to assist in sociological research to explore her long-term fit within the field. Through Dr. Roach’s mentorship, Traylor gained hands-on experience that ultimately solidified her commitment to becoming a doctoral student.
“I assumed I would likely go to grad school, but a Ph.D. just seemed so out of reach. I would say Dr. Roach is the first faculty member who ever believed in me. She really connected me with so many people in the department, which helped me grow my research knowledge,” Traylor said. “Also, the way she taught was so inspiring. She is the type of teacher that someone wants to emulate. I hope to be half the instructor she is one day. There have also been others like Dr. Schrock and Dr. Rohlinger who gave me the opportunity to see the research process, which I will always be thankful for.”
Traylor was also a member of the Chi Omega – Gamma Chapter at FSU and served as a Program Assistant for Florida State University International Programs.
After graduating with her Ph.D., Traylor plans to become a sociology professor.
