Alumni Spotlight: Woody Harvey

Woody Harvey – an FSU alumnus (B.S. Interdisciplinary Social Science ’18) – was named contract manager for Florida’s Statewide Emergency Mass Notification Contract.

In this role, he will oversee the Alert Florida Program, the state’s official emergency alert and notification system. Through his coordination, most Florida counties, universities, and state colleges use this program to ensure that all Floridians have access to life-saving messages.

“Personally, the most fulfilling aspect of my position is knowing that the Alert Florida program saves lives, and I get the opportunity to work with so many other great emergency managers throughout the state to continue to improve how Floridians receive life-safety information as quickly and accurately as possible.”

Within the Interdisciplinary Social Science Program at FSU, Harvey had specialized in public administration and political science, which served as a foundation for a career in public safety and emergency management.

During his time at FSU, Harvey enrolled in the Emergency Management and Homeland Security (EMHS) Program, which equipped him with skills to plan for, respond to, and manage emergencies.

“The courses I took in the EMHS program, such as the UAS Certification classes and the Emergency Management Internship prep class, set me on my way to my current career.”

As part of the EMHS program, Harvey completed an internship with the State Watch Office that launched his career. He credits Rob McDaniel and David Merrick for helping him secure the internship, which shaped his path in the field.

Harvey stays connected with the FSU EMHS team, sharing potential career opportunities for students and providing guided tours.

When asked what advice he would give to current students, Harvey said, “No two disasters are the exact same. Problem-solving and communication skills are key. If you work better under pressure with lives at stake and working alongside all State Agencies, Law Enforcement, Health and Medical, Fire Rescue, etc., you will enjoy this career.”
