Communications Assistant, Department of Geography
OPS Position
The Communications Assistant for the Department of Geography will work with the Department Chair, the Department Digital Media and Outreach Coordinator, and the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy’s (COSSPP) Director of Communications to highlight faculty research and teaching, student and alumni successes, and share other departmental updates through the Department and College’s social media accounts.
The Communications Assistant will be responsible for writing and editing news and feature stories, coordinating social media activities (including content creation, publishing/scheduling posts, engaging with followers, running reports, etc.), and taking photos at events.
Additional responsibilities include keeping content on the Department’s website up to date, organizing content and digital archives, and other marketing and administrative tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
- Excellent writing and editing skills
- Organizational skills and attention to detail – must be able to prioritize and meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment and maintaining a high quality of work
- Knowledgeable about (or interest in learning) to administer professional social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn)
- Knowledgeable about (or interest in learning) WordPress
- Proficient with common office software (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Zoom) and ability to quickly learn other programs
- Basic photography and photo editing skills (or interest in learning on the job)
- Basic graphic design skills (or interest in learning on the job)
Availability:
- Must be able to commit to 10 hours/week with a flexible schedule to attend events that may occur outside of the Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. work week.
Compensation:
- The position will pay $12–15/hour commensurate with experience
- If desired, you may also earn academic credit toward your degree or complete FSU Career Center’s Experience Recognition Program for a transcript notation.

Social Media Manager, Unconquered by Debt
Unconquered by Debt (UBD) is a financial wellness program at FSU sponsored by the Stavros Center.
UBD is a series of workshops and online content that provides the basis for financial wellness and an understanding about how to build wealth. We are looking for a talented Social Media Manager to join our team and administer our social media accounts and provide graphic design for printed materials. You will be responsible for managing posts and responding to followers, creating original text and video content across the various platforms. You will manage the UBD image in a cohesive way to achieve our marketing goals.
As a Social Media Manager, we expect you to be up-to-date with the latest digital technologies and social media trends. You should have excellent communication skills and be able to express our UBD’s views creatively. Ultimately, you should be able to handle our social media presence independently while ensuring high levels of web traffic and customer engagement.
Responsibilities
- Be informed on current benchmark trends and audience preferences
- Design and implement social media strategy to align with UBD goals
- Generate, edit, publish and share engaging content weekly (e.g. original text, photos,
- videos and news)
- Monitor web traffic metrics
- Collaborate with UBD management team and student staff to ensure brand consistency
- Communicate with followers, respond to, or forward to management, queries in a timely manner
- Oversee social media accounts’ design
- Suggest and implement new features to develop brand awareness, such as promotions and competitions
- Stay up-to-date with current technologies and trends in social media, design tools and applications
Requirements
- Proven work experience in the social media sphere
- Hands on experience in content management
- Proficiency using Canva Pro
- Knowledge of design software and technologies (such as InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Photoshop) not required, but a plus
- Excellent copywriting skills
- Ability to deliver creative content (text, image and video)
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to meet deadlines on time
- Ability to respond to occasional last minute requests
