Attend COSSPP’s Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Lecture featuring Melissa Kearney, Ph.D.

Join the College of Social Sciences for the next talk in the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Lecture Series: “The Two Parent Privilege: How Americans Stopped Getting Married and Started Falling Behind” on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Melissa Kearney, Ph.D.

The lecture features Melissa Kearney, Ph.D., the Neil Moskowitz Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland. Dr. Kearney is an accomplished economist who holds many other designations, including the Director of the Aspen Economic Strategy Group. She also serves on the editorial board of the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy and Journal of Economic Literature.

Her research interests include poverty and inequality in the U.S., social and education programs, and the impact of economic conditions and government programs on low-income households. She has testified in front of Congress on the topic of U.S. income inequality.

In this talk, Dr. Kearney will make a provocative and data-driven case that the seismic shift away from marriage over the past 40 years has not been good for children, and it has worsened inequality and eroded social mobility. She argues that strengthening families needs to be an urgent policy priority.

The lecture begins at 6 p.m. in the Bellamy Building, room 102.
