The lecture will be held on Friday, March 8 in the Pepper Center Broad Auditorium and will feature Jennifer Kara Montez, Ph.D., a Professor of Sociology at Syracuse University. A reception with light refreshments will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the lecture will begin at 10 a.m.

Dr. Montez’s research has centered around trends in population health since the 1980s, focusing on the policies that affect those trends. Dr. Montez examines the effects these trends may have on women, people without college degrees, and those living in the South and Midwest.

The annual lecture was established by Elwood “Woody” Carlson, Ph.D., and is named after the founder of CDPH, Charles B. Nam, Ph.D. The lecture series recognizes Dr. Nam’s significant contributions to the Center, and the College as a whole. Dr. Nam served as the Director of the Center for 15 years and is currently a Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus and Research Associate. To this day, Dr. Nam remains involved with the Center through his ongoing research and support for the Charles B. Nam Scholarship Award in Demography.

The lecture series brings a speaker every year to discuss their recent research in demography. The lecture typically occurs in March, which coincides with Dr. Nam’s birthday. Last year the lecture featured Jennie E. Brand, Ph.D., a Professor of Sociology and Statistics and Director of the California Center for Population Research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
