2025 Annual Charles B. Nam Lecture Connects Students, Faculty, and Scholars 

The Annual Charles B. Nam Lecture in the Sociology of Population, hosted by the Center for Demography and Population Health (CDPH) on Friday, March 21, brought students and faculty together to hear from David F. Warner, Ph.D., a professor of sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Seven College of Social Science and Public Policy (COSSPP) faculty – Amid Ardakani, Ph.D. Will Butler, Ph.D., Karen Cyphers, Ph.D., Maria Cristina Ramos, Ph.D., Annette Schwabe, Ph.D., Ladanya Ramirez Surmeier, Ph.D., and Tracy Woodard, Ph.D.– received University Teaching Awards for the 2024-2025 school year.

The College of Social Sciences and Public Policy has announced its 2025 Faculty Research, Teaching, and Service Award recipients.  

Flowing from the COSSPP Strategic Plan, the college has developed a COSSPP Faculty Awards Series to honor high-achieving faculty in the areas of teaching, research, and service.

COSSPP Researchers Selected as PNAS 2024 Cozzarelli Prize Finalists 

The Center for Demography and Population Health’s (CDPH) Associate Director Mathew Hauer, Ph.D., and Sunshine Jacobs, a Ph.D. student in sociology were recently recognized as 2024 Cozzarelli Prize Finalists in recognition of their paper “Climate migration amplifies demographic change and population aging.”

LeRoy Collins Eminent Scholar in Civic Education and Political Science and Director of the LeRoy Collins Institute Lonna Atkeson, Ph.D., co-authored “The Costs of Voting and Voter Confidence” with Florida State University alumnus Eli McKown-Dawson (B.S. National Academy of Sciences Member and Acclaimed Spatial Data Scientist Joins Florida State University

One of the world’s foremost experts in spatial data science has joined Florida State University’s Department of Geography.

A. Stewart Fotheringham, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, is the new Krafft Professor of Spatial Data Science and the founding director of the new Spatial Data Science Center in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy.

“Dr. Fotheringham’s appointment is a game changer for FSU and COSSPP,” said Tim Chapin, dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. “His expertise in spatial analysis and geocomputation will drive groundbreaking research across disciplines and position FSU as a leader in spatial data science. We are thrilled to welcome a scholar of his caliber to our college and university.”

Engineering Researchers Preserve Florida’s Heritage Sites while Streamlining Transportation Projects

Civil engineering researchers at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering are transforming how we document and assess the historical significance of transportation-related structures like highways, railroads, and canals. They aim to help the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) identify and protect these valuable resources while ensuring that transportation projects are completed on time and within budget.

FSU Students to Develop Innovative Solutions in ‘Rapid Relocation’ 24-Hour Design Sprint

Florida State University’s Innovation Hub and College of Social Sciences and Public Policy (COSSPP) will host a 24-Hour Design Sprint for all FSU students focused on “Rapid Relocation: Enhancing Emergency Evacuation in Florida” starting Friday, January 31.
