Associate Economics Professor Retires After 36 Years of Service 

Associate Professor of Economics Paul Beaumont, Ph.D., will retire in Spring 2024 after 36 years of service at Florida State University. Since joining FSU, Dr. Beaumont has taught Economics to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. He’s also aided the Department of Mathematics as a Courtesy Professor.

2024 Charles B. Nam Lecture in the Sociology of Population Brings CDPH Community Together 

The Annual Charles B. Nam Lecture in the Sociology of Population, hosted on Friday, March 8, brought the Center for Demography and Population Health (CDPH) community together to hear from Jennifer Montez, Ph.D., a Sociology Professor from Syracuse University on the topic, “U.S. States and Population Health: What Do We Know and Where Do We Go From Here?”

Florida State University Assistant Professor Juyeong Choi, Ph.D. of FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, doctoral students Hiba Jalloul and Navid Nickdoost, and Planner-in-Residence Dennis Smith, AICP of Urban and Regional Planning, co-authored, “Identification and Prioritization of Multidimensional Resilience Factors for Incorporation in Coastal State Transportation Infrastructure Planning,” published in Natural Hazards.

Two COSSPP Faculty Win University Teaching Awards

Two professors from the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy won Florida State 2023-2024 University Teaching Awards. 

Alexandra Cockerham, Ph.D. and Katie Sherron, Ph.D. will be honored at FSU’s Faculty Awards Celebration on April 23, 2024. 

The University Teaching Awards recognize multi-faceted teaching excellence, including serving as a positive role model to students, imparting a respect for truth and a love of learning, challenging students’ thinking and assumptions, demonstrating respect for all persons, and employing innovative instructional techniques.

3 COSSPP Specialized Faculty Promoted

The College of Social Sciences and Public Policy (COSSPP) announced the promotions of three specialized faculty members.

“These successes continue our 100% success rate over the last decade-plus in seeing candidates that we advance to the University level being approved for promotion,” said COSSPP Dean Timothy Chapin. “While these promotions rest primarily in the excellence of the faculty that we hire, it also reflects the supportive and productive work environment we have collectively established within the College.”

COSSPP Celebrates 50 Years of Excellence with Alumni in Washington, D.C.

Florida State University’s College of Social Sciences and Public Policy (COSSPP) celebrated its first 50 years of excellence with alumni in Washington, D.C., on March 7, 2024. More than 100 alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends gathered at the National Press Club in observance of the College’s 50th anniversary to reflect on our rich history and look to the future.

Florida State University Associate Professors of Urban and Regional Planning, William Butler, Ph.D., Tisha Holmes, Ph.D, and doctoral student Anthony Milordis, co-authored, “Can Florida’s Coast Survive Its Reliance on Development? Fiscal Vulnerability and Funding Woes Under Sea Level Rise.” published in the Journal of the American Planning Association, one of the flagship journals of the field of urban planning.
