Research Spotlight – Resilience in Complex Disasters: Florida’s Hurricane Preparedness, Response, and Recovery Amid COVID-19 

Florida State University Associate Professor of Public Administration Tian Tang, Ph.D., was the lead author of “Resilience in Complex Disasters: Florida’s Hurricane Preparedness, Response, and Recovery Amid COVID-19,” published in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction. The article examines emerging challenges and strategies governmental and nonprofit agencies implemented during the hurricane-pandemic compound disasters of the 2020 and 2021 hurricane seasons. 

President of U.N. General Assembly Ponders Climate, Human Rights, and Energy Resources in FSU Visit

His Excellency Dennis Francis, President of the United Nations General Assembly at its 78th Session, visited Florida State University this week to engage with students, learn about the university’s groundbreaking research, and lecture about some of the world’s most pressing issues.  

FSU Sociologist Earns Early Career Award for Work in Population Health

Patricia Homan, Ph.D., an associate professor in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, is the first Florida State University faculty member to receive an early career award from the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science (IAPHS) for her work in population health.

COSSPP Welcomes New Eminent Scholar Chairs and Endowed Professors for Fall 2024

The College of Social Science and Public Policy has announced two eminent scholar chairs and six endowed professorships for Fall 2024. These faculty members were chosen for these positions across the College to support Florida State University’s mission to conduct innovative research and provide high-quality instruction.

Distinguished Professor of Economics Mark Isaac Wins ESA Distinguished Service Award 

John and Hallie Quinn Eminent Scholar Mark Isaac, Ph.D., was awarded the inaugural Distinguished Service Award from the Economic Science Association (ESA) at their World Meeting on June 20, 2024.  

ESA is a professional organization for economists and scholars who contribute to their field through controlled experiments. Economic experiments allow for a better understanding of economic variables which might not be observable in the field.

Anne Chin joins FSU as Department Chair and Harrison V. Chase Distinguished Professor of Geography

Anne Chin, Ph.D., joined FSU’s faculty as the Department of Geography’s new chair and the Harrison V. Chase Distinguished Professor of Geography on July 22, 2024. 

“After having anticipated coming to FSU for months it is great to be here at last,” Dr. Chin said. “I’m excited to join my colleagues to transform our department and accelerate our work toward meeting the many pressing social and environmental challenges of the world.”
