Dr. Hauer is the Associate Director of the CDPH and an Associate Professor of Sociology at FSU, and this appointment recognizes his exceptional contributions to research in demography and related fields, unwavering commitment to academic excellence, and dedication to his scholarship and teaching.

“I am delighted with Dr. Hauer’s appointment to the Nam Professorship,” said John Taylor, Ph.D., Director of the CDPH and Professor of Sociology. “His scholarship is novel and important and should inform public policy on some of the most important social issues of our time.”

As the newly appointed Nam Professor, Dr. Hauer will assist in furthering the mission of the professorship, which was established to advance research and scholarship in the field of demography and sociology of population.

Dr. Hauer has previously researched topics such as population projections, environmental sociology, and spatial analysis. His recent research has examined issues such as population exposure to coastal flooding due to sea levels rising, as well as mass migration motivated by climate change.

His research has been featured in top-tier journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and Nature, and has been featured in the general news media.

In 2022, he co-authored a study published in PNAS that estimates exposure to lead has robbed Americans of 2.6 IQ points per person on average. This groundbreaking study garnered widespread media interest in over 850 articles from outlets like The Washington Post, ABC, NBC, NPR, US News, Web MD, USA Today, The Guardian, Psychology Today, and The Hill. Its findings were also mentioned on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, reaching over 2 million of the show’s viewers.

Dr. Hauer, who has been a dedicated faculty member since 2018, shared his gratitude and enthusiasm for his appointment.

“Receiving the Charles B. Nam Professorship is a tremendous honor, and I’m eager to contribute to the advancement of demographic research and our understanding of the societal impacts of population dynamics,” Dr. Hauer said. “I look forward to leveraging the professorship to collaborate with my colleagues and students and to further strengthen CDPH.”

The Charles B. Nam Professorship was established in 2003 with a significant contribution from Charles B. Nam, Ph.D., the founding Director of CDPH and Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus. The professorship was established to attract highly regarded demographers to the CDPH.

Dr. Nam also commented on Dr. Hauer’s appointment, saying “I applaud the appointment of Dr. Hauer to the Nam Professorship. His research has already been outstanding and his future contributions to demography can be expected.”

Dr. Hauer’s appointment to the professorship began in August 2023. For more information about the Charles B. Nam Professorship, click here. For more information about Dr. Hauer and his research interests, click here.
