Florida State University’s Civil Rights Institute (CRI) celebrated Black History Month with an hour-long screening of the “Justice Sunday” series on Wednesday, February 21, in the College of Medicine Auditorium.
“Justice Sunday” is a yearly program sponsored by the 400 Years of African American History Commission (400YAAHC) highlighting the importance of community service as it intersects with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy as a committed leader within his community and across the nation. The program went virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic to continually inspire service, despite limitations of the time.
At the CRI’s celebration, attendees enjoyed opening remarks from Ted Ellis, CRI Director and 400YAAHC Acting Chair, a presentation of poetry from Aaron Tillman, Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development at FSU, followed by a one-hour screening of the full 12-hour 2024 Justice Sunday program.
This event was presented in partnership with FSU’s College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. College of Medicine, College of Social Work, Student-Athlete Development, the Student National Medical Association, and the Black Student Union at FSU.
“The screening of Justice Sunday was so timely. I feel like we’re in a place in our nation, especially on our campus, where our history isn’t appreciated, and our story isn’t told,” Tillman said. “The screening had a way of bringing that out where it was digestible, but it was something that could be taken and valued at all levels.”
CRI plans to host a series of programs to view the rest of Justice Sunday throughout the next year. Follow @FSU_CRI on Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn for more information.
