COSS Student Leadership Council wraps up a successful 2022-2023 academic year

The College of Social Sciences Student Leadership Council (SLC) provides personal and professional development opportunities to students in FSU’s College of Social Sciences and Public Policy (COSSPP) and serves as a liaison between the student body and the administration, advocating for the needs of students and the strategic initiatives led by the College.

The SLC hosted Meet the College Week to get students more engaged. Programming included the Social Sciences Involvement Fair, where students learned about different Registered Student Organizations with missions of interest to our student body. The SLC also hosted First Week with Frother’s, giving COSSPP students a chance to connect with a much-needed coffee break during their first week of fall classes.

In late February, the SLC teamed up with Assistant Professor of Public Health Marcos Colon, Ph.D., to host the North American premiere of his newest film “Stepping Softly on the Earth.” The film highlights economic and environmental injustice within indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest basin.

In March, SLC hosted Agree to Disagree in partnership with the Power of We. A long-standing tradition, this annual event brings together students, faculty, and community members from across the political spectrum to discuss their ideals in a civil and productive manner. CEO of Village Square Liz Joyner gave the keynote address, which focused on how civil discourse is essential to a well-functioning democracy.

The SLC concluded the semester with Finals Yoga Flow in partnership with FSU’s Yoga Club helping COSSPP students destress at one of the most crucial times of the academic year.

“The SLC had an amazing year,” said Outgoing Chair Elizabeth Chabot. “From increasing the number of events we offered, to expanding our officer board, I am so proud of what we have accomplished.”

Chabot is looking forward to seeing the reach of the SLC continue to grow under the leadership of Incoming Chair Isabella Riquezes.
