Tell us about your fondest memory in Bellamy or as a COSSPP student.

Let me share the memorable experience I had at Bellamy as a graduate student of International Affairs. Imagine being immersed in a sea of 500-page assignments and extensive essays; it felt like diving headfirst into an ocean of academic intensity. Initially, the workload was overwhelming. However, as I adapted and honed my skills, I began to navigate these challenges with increasing confidence. What once seemed insurmountable gradually became an enjoyable and fulfilling journey. One of my fondest memories is the day I submitted my first 2000-word paper without feeling overwhelmed. It felt like a significant achievement, comparable to conquering a great summit. The sense of satisfaction that came from mastering these academic tasks was incredibly rewarding. In retrospect, the challenges I faced at Bellamy were instrumental in my growth. They taught me resilience and perseverance, turning obstacles into accomplishments. For this invaluable experience, I am deeply grateful.
Who was your favorite professor and why?
When reflecting on my time at FSU, one name stands out among the faculty who left a profound impact on my academic journey: Professor Lee K. Metcalf. Professor Metcalf assumed the role of guiding light during my studies, particularly in navigating the extensive reading and writing assignments characteristic of our coursework. What distinguished Professor Metcalf was not only her commitment to academic rigor but also her unwavering dedication to her students’ growth and development. Despite the daunting nature of the tasks she assigned, her approach was marked by a blend of challenge and support, which fostered an environment conducive to learning and personal achievement. I am deeply grateful for Professor Metcalf’s mentorship and guidance throughout my time at FSU. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, instilling in me a sense of resilience and determination that continues to shape my academic and professional endeavors. In recognizing Professor Metcalf as my favorite professor, I am reminded of the invaluable role educators play in shaping the trajectory of their students’ lives. It is with sincere appreciation and admiration that I reflect on the impact she has had on my academic journey.
What was the most interesting thing you learned as a COSSPP student?
The most captivating aspect of my experience as a COSSPP student was undoubtedly the exceptional quality of the university and its ecosystem. From the distinguished faculty members who imparted invaluable knowledge to the diverse community of students who enriched classroom discussions, every facet of FSU exuded excellence. What truly stood out to me was the vibrant campus life, characterized by a sense of inclusivity and camaraderie. Whether through engaging in stimulating study groups or participating in extracurricular activities, I found immense satisfaction in being an integral part of this dynamic environment. Moreover, the satisfaction derived from being a COSSPP student extended beyond academic pursuits. It encompassed the sense of belonging and purpose that comes from contributing to a community committed to intellectual growth and social impact. In hindsight, it was not merely the individual lessons learned but rather the holistic experience of being immersed in such an enriching environment that left an indelible mark on my academic journey.
How has the College – including its faculty, staff, students, and alumni – impacted your goals and career plans?
The COSSPP, encompassing its esteemed faculty, dedicated staff, vibrant student body, and accomplished alumni network, has played a pivotal role in shaping my goals and career trajectory. My journey with the college began as a graduate student, navigating the challenges of rigorous academic coursework under the guidance of exceptional professors like Professor Lee K. Metcalf. Through their mentorship and support, I not only honed my academic skills but also cultivated a deep appreciation for the complexities of international affairs. Upon graduation, equipped with a master’s degree from this prestigious institution and a significantly enhanced command of the English language, I embarked on a professional journey that saw me assuming roles of increasing responsibility and impact. From my appointment as a Commercial Attaché in New York to subsequent opportunities in academia, each milestone in my career has been deeply influenced by the foundation laid during my time at FSU. Moreover, the network of alumni forged during my tenure at the college has been instrumental in opening doors and providing invaluable guidance and support along the way. Their collective wisdom and shared experiences have served as a constant source of inspiration as I navigate the ever-evolving landscape of my career. What has been your most impactful experience at FSU?
My most impactful experience at FSU revolves around the vibrant discussions on American foreign policy that unfolded within the classroom setting. These dialogues were not just academic exercises but rather dynamic exchanges that profoundly impacted both my professional trajectory and personal growth. Engaging in these discussions, I witnessed a diverse array of perspectives emerge, each contributing to a rich tapestry of ideas and insights. What struck me most was the atmosphere of openness and inclusivity, where students felt empowered to voice their opinions freely and confidently, irrespective of background or experience. This environment of intellectual curiosity and respectful discourse not only deepened my understanding of American foreign policy but also fostered crucial skills in diplomacy, communication, and critical thinking. As I navigated these discussions, I gained a newfound appreciation for the complexities of global affairs and the importance of dialogue in shaping informed perspectives. In addition to the experiences I’ve shared, I’d like to highlight a few more aspects of my journey that underscore the transformative impact of my time at FSU. Firstly, living in the Alumni Village was a unique and enriching experience. It provided a sense of community and support that was invaluable as I balanced the demands of my studies and family life. My older son attended the Alumni Village Preschool, where he quickly adapted and learned English, while my younger son was born in Tallahassee, proudly embracing his identity as a Turkish American. The combination of a rigorous academic environment, a supportive community, and exposure to a diverse and inclusive culture played a crucial role in my personal and professional development. The skills and confidence I gained at FSU paved the way for my role as a Commercial Attaché in New York and facilitated my acceptance into PhD programs. Lastly, the friendships and connections I made at FSU have had a lasting impact. The network of alumni, faculty, and peers continues to be a source of support, inspiration, and collaboration. These relationships have been instrumental in my career and personal growth, reinforcing the value of community and shared experiences. In summary, my time at FSU was a period of profound growth and development, filled with challenges that pushed me to excel and opportunities that enriched my life.
