COSSPP Distinguished Alumnus Speaks to Urban and Regional Planning Students

Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey spoke to FSU students in URP 4022: Collective Decision Making about storm preparation and recovery efforts on Thursday, October 10. 2024.

URP 4022, or Collective Decision Making, is a required course for the undergraduate minor in planning studies and one of the required options in the Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Pathway in DURP. It is meant to be an introduction to “planning as a collective decision-making tool and introduces the concepts of efficiency, equity, and environmental quality as competing bases for public decisions.”

“Mayor John Dailey is a great friend of FSU and our college”, said Chris Coutts, Ph.D., a professor in FSU’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP). “My students and myself learned a great deal about the incredible complexity in organizing social systems for hurricane preparation and recovery efforts. Tallahassee has been a national leader in these efforts.”

Dailey has had a close relationship with FSU, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from FSU’s College of Social Science and Public Policy (COSSPP). He has had a successful political career, being elected twice as the Leon County Chairman and later being elected Mayor of Tallahassee in 2018. In 2024, he was chosen to be a member of the COSSPP Distinguished Alumni Class of 2024.
