Sheridan Meek – an FSU alumna graduating with her Master’s in Applied Economics this summer – enrolled in her program to gain practical experience and gain a competitive edge in the job market.

The Master’s in Applied Economics program at FSU prepares students for a variety of careers in government and the private sector. MAEP graduates often begin their careers as analysts, junior data scientists, or research associates.
Throughout the one-year program, students work closely with faculty, alumni, and civic leaders to learn how economic theory is applied to data and consulting projects in the labor force. They gain exposure to in-demand software and learn data analysis skills that make them competitive in an increasingly complex workforce.
This spring, Meek completed an internship with the Florida Chamber of Commerce to round out her experience in the program.
“In my internship, I did research on socio-economic factors that contribute to the currently low third-grade reading scores in Florida,” Meek said. “The research is used in various initiatives, with the major goal being that 100% of third-graders in Florida are reading at grade level or above by 2030.”
When asked why she choose FSU, Meek said “I chose to attend Florida State because throughout my entire application and touring process, I could feel how much FSU values their students, giving them the best support during their academic careers and beyond! There are so many resources and opportunities available to students!”
During her undergraduate years, Meek was a part of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and served on the leadership team for Navigators Campus Ministry. Meek graduated with her Bachelor’s in Economics and Statistics in the Fall 2020 before pursuing her Master’s in Applied Economics.
“The Master’s in Applied Economics program made me feel incredibly equipped to join the workforce this fall,” Meek said. “The classes in this program are tailored to work we will be doing in our careers, and there have been many networking opportunities.”
The program provides an opportunity to develop strong mentor-mentee relationships with faculty and alumni. Through the program, students are presented with networking opportunities with program alumni and leaders in state and local government.
“I have found that this program is highly respected by employers and that I definitely have an edge in applying to jobs because of the connections I have made,” Meek said.
After many years at FSU, Meek reflects on her time overall. “Whether it be professors that were genuinely invested in my future or fellow students that became lifelong friends, the people I met along the way at Florida State have made the greatest impact on my life and future,” Meek said.
Soon to be a double FSU alum after graduation this summer, we wish her the best of luck as she starts post-grad life!
