Ten College of Social Sciences and Public Policy (COSSPP) students were awarded the inaugural Dunaway Family Celebrating Excellence Scholarships this spring and recognized at an awards presentation on April 3, 2024.
The Dunaway Family Celebrating Excellence Scholarships are a tribute to Mark and Julie Dunaway’s vision to broaden scholar and policymaker awareness about successful African Americans whose works are not well-known.
The scholarship aims to help students from all backgrounds learn about these individuals’ origins, contributions, and accomplishments. These scholarships are intended to celebrate excellence and are open to all COSSPP students, regardless of race or ethnicity.
The 2024 recipients included Allyson Anderson, Gabriella Behar, Emilie Parry, Jasmine Florexil, Jersey Tidwell, Julia Duncan, Alexandra Bauernfeind, Susan Espinoza, Amelia Dellamano, and Katherine Alonso.
The winners were selected based on their strong, thoughtful, and complete essays on a series of reflection questions about the accomplishments of a prominent African-American leader of their choosing.
Applicants reflected on media related to their accomplishments, including books, articles, video interviews, and podcasts. Some of the leaders selected included:
- Condoleezza Rice – First Female African-American U.S. Secretary of State
- Coleman Hughes – Writer, Host of Podcast ‘Conversations with Coleman,’ and a Forbes 30 Under 30 recipient
- Ian Rowe – Enterpriser, Champion of Education for Disadvantaged Children
- Robert Woodson – Civil Rights Leader who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Each recipient will receive a one-time $2,000 award to support their scholarly endeavors while at Florida State.
The Dunaway Family has provided another scholarship opportunity to COSSPP students named the Dunaway Family Economics Excellence Scholarships, which will focus on economists that are not widely recognized. Applications for this scholarship will be due on September 30, 2024. For more information about the scholarships, contact Dr. Joe Calhoun in the Department of Economics at jcalhoun@fsu.edu.
