Researchers in the DeVoe L. Moore Center (DMC) prepared a policy report titled “Practical Strategies for Addressing Florida’s Crisis in Housing Affordability,” published by the Florida Policy Project in June 2023.
The DMC’s Research Director, Crystal Taylor, Ph.D., was the team lead assisted by DMC Director Samuel Staley, Ph.D., along with FSU students and Housing Policy Research Assistants: Juanchi Roca-Paisley, Arthi Solayappan, Noah Dankner, Amanda Flynn, and Abigail Graus.
The Florida Policy Project is an independent, non-partisan, and non-profit organization dedicated to advancing policies and budgets that improve economic mobility and quality of life for all Floridians.
“Practical Strategies” is part of a series of reports highlighting realistic and evidence-driven solutions to pressing public policy problems.
Researchers found a staggering 945,687 very low-income households where hardworking families, seniors, and other individuals are spending more than half of their income on housing.
Additionally, the researchers found more than half of all renters in Florida allocate at least 30% of their income toward rent.
“The housing affordability studies released today outline the why, the ideas, and the best practice solutions. In the coming weeks, in collaboration with legislative leadership and university partners, we will produce strategies to best implement these practices,” said former Senator Jeff Brandes, Founder of the Florida Policy Project.
The report has already received widespread press and media coverage, including articles and reports in Florida Trend, The Capitolist, USF public media, WFSU public media, FloridaRealtors.org, Lewlew Media, WFIT radio, and iHeart Radio. The report’s publication is a landmark for DMC’s housing affordability team, which was recently formed this past spring semester.
