Davide Luparello

Biography

Davide Luparello is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics at Florida State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from The Pennsylvania State University in 2026, and holds an M.Sc. and a B.Sc. in Economic and Social Sciences from Bocconi University.

His research lies in industrial organization and applied microeconomics, where he develops and applies structural econometric methods to recover agents’ behavior from observed data. A central thread of his agenda is the joint estimation of productivity and market power in both output and input markets: how efficiently firms turn inputs into output, the markups they set in output markets, and the markdowns they exercise when purchasing labor and other inputs. He studies how these objects can be identified when prices, quantities, and physical productivity are only partially observed, and how the resulting estimates change the way we interpret, for example, firm efficiency, misallocation, and the gains from trade.

This work is as empirical as it is methodological. It draws on granular administrative microdata across several countries and industries, including India’s Annual Survey of Industries and Colombia’s Census of Manufactures.

Alongside his position at Florida State, Luparello is a Special Sworn Status researcher with access to restricted U.S. Census Bureau data and a Fellow of the Baffi Centre on Economics, Finance, and Regulation at Bocconi University. At FSU he teaches doctoral and undergraduate econometrics.
