When is the application deadline?
We encourage all applicants to submit their complete application before January 1st to ensure you are considered for funding.
How do I apply for financial support?
All applicants who submit their application before the January 1 deadline are automatically considered for funding. There is no separate application.
I am an international student. What are my chances of financial aid?
All applicants will be considered for funding when they apply. Students originally from one of several Latin American or Caribbean nations are also eligible for the Latin American and Caribbean Scholarship.
For additional financial resources we refer you to the Graduate College.
I am an international student, do I need a transcript translation?
Yes! The university now requires an English Translation of international transcripts. The current preferred company is SpanTran. However, the university will accept any NACES approved translation. Complete applications for International Students must be complete by January 15th to ensure there are no delays in processing, I-20 paperwork, and isa appointments. Many countries have long visa scheduling delays currently.
I am from China, Iran, Venezuela, Russia, North Korea, Syria, or Cuba: can I attend FSU?
Recently the State of Florida introduced a secondary review process for state employees who were domiciled in one of the listed nations and deemed “Foreign Principles”
“Foreign principal” in this context means: Any person who is domiciled (physically present with an intent to return) in a foreign country of concern and is not a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States. A member of a political party in a foreign country of concern; A government official of a foreign country of concern.
The secondary review can lead to delays in the issuance of an I-20. This will affect students with funded offers, as funding requires state employment.
Can you waive the application fee?
No. The university refuses to waive the application fee under any circumstances.
Do I need to take the TOEFL? What about other English proficiency exams?
All international students must provide language proficiency scores. Currently, the graduate college accepts scores from several testing agencies. For a complete listing, please click here. However, the TOEFL is the only exam that also can be used to prove Spoken English requirements for TA/RA positions.
Can I substitute the GMAT for the GRE?
No. The GMAT is not considered an acceptable substitute.
Am I guaranteed admission if I meet the GRE and GPA minimums?
No. The admissions committee reviews the entire application package when making a decision.
Am I automatically rejected if I don’t meet both the GRE and GPA minimums?
No. The admissions committee reviews the entire application package when making a decision.
If I come on my own funding and do well in the program, can I earn a teaching assistantship in subsequent years?
This does happen on rare occasions, but the limiting factor is availability of funds (very hard to predict).
Can I submit unofficial transcripts as a part of my application packet?
No. The university requires official transcripts when you apply. Receiving official transcripts and translations is critical
Is the GRE required?
Yes. While many universities have made the GRE optional following COVID-19, the FSU Department of Economics still requires the submission of the GRE as a part of your application packet.
Do I need a faculty sponsor to apply?
No. Students do not need a sponsor in the department to apply.
