The Rod and Hope Brim Eminent Scholar Chair position was established in 1993 to enhance instruction and research in Economics.

“I am so very pleased Dr. Kwasnica joined FSU’s Department of Economics as our new Rod and Hope Brim Eminent Scholar Chair,” said Tim Chapin, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. “The leadership and expertise he brings to FSU will take our experimental research group to the next level.”

Dr. Kwasnica received his B.A. in Economics from the University of Arizona in 1994, and in 2000 he received his Ph.D. in Social Science from the California Institute of Technology. He then joined the Department of Business at Pennsylvania State University and became a full Professor of Business Economics in 2014.

Dr. Kwasnica joined the Economics Department at FSU in January 2024 and is now a part of FSU’s XS/FS Experimental Social Science Lab. XS/FS is made up of interdisciplinary researchers in the fields of Political Science, Economics, and Accounting.

“The XS/FS cluster at Florida State is truly an area of excellence in experimental economics, and I can’t wait to work with my new colleagues,” Dr. Kwasnica said. “After nearly 25 years in a business school, I am very excited to be a part of the Department of Economics and the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy at Florida State University, where I will have more opportunities to train Ph.D. students in what I do.”

Dr. Kwasnica is an experimental economist, and his research focuses on how humans behave in a variety of institutions. Much of his work is about how auction designs work with human participants.

“The resources provided by the Brim endowment are fantastic and will help me further my research,” he said.

Dr. Kwasnica also hopes to use the resources of XS/FS to collaborate with other researchers.

“I believe in interdisciplinary research and many research questions in other areas can be studied with experimental economics methods,” Dr. Kwasnica said. “I hope to spread the word about the lab and build bridges with researchers in other areas across campus, ideally resulting in new and exciting research collaborations.”
