FSU Economics Chair Co-Hosts Economics Workshops in South Caucasus

This summer, Florida State University’s Department of Economics Chair and Director of the Stavros Center for Economic Education Joe Calhoun, Ph.D., co-led economic reporting workshops for journalists in the South Caucasus.

An economic reporting workshop hosted by EFI.

The series of workshops Dr. Calhoun co-led was hosted by the Economic Fundamentals Initiative (EFI). In these workshops, journalists learned techniques for making economic ideas accessible to a wide audience while still maintaining their meaning. They also discussed the many ways that economic policies can affect society and communities.

In addition to learning from the economic experts, the journalists also engaged in discussion and shared their own ideas.

“All the events were truly a collaborative effort, with everyone learning from others in the room,” Dr. Calhoun said. “Each workshop was a tremendous opportunity for me to learn and to understand the countries’ economic histories and opportunities.”

Several media outlets covered the workshops. Dr. Calhoun made appearances on popular talk shows in the South Caucuses, such as “Bari Luys, Բարի Լույս, Good Morning” in Armenia, and Forbes’ “The Checkpoints” in Georgia.
