FSU Recognized Two COSSPP Alumni and Faculty at the Emeriti Alumni Society Induction Brunch During Homecoming Weekend

Florida State University recognized two notable Emeriti Alumni and Faculty from the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy at the Emeriti Alumni Society Induction Brunch during Homecoming Weekend.

Dean Eyman Distinctive Service Award

This award honors non-alumni faculty or university personnel who have provided exceptional service to students, affirmed a commitment to student development, and contributed to the advancement of FSU.

Dean Emerita Marie Cowart

Dean Marie Cowart

Dean Emerita Marie Cowart, Ph.D., is a distinguished academic leader whose visionary service has shaped public health education and interdisciplinary research at Florida State University. Over her 31-year career at FSU, she served as professor of gerontology, director of the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy, and dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy.

A nationally recognized expert in aging policy and long-term care, Dean Cowart advanced scholarship addressing the needs of Florida’s growing aging population. As dean, she championed innovative, cross-disciplinary approaches to public service and research, strengthening programs in health policy, sociology, and urban planning.

Even in retirement, she remains deeply committed to the university community, continuing to mentor students and faculty. Her enduring dedication embodies the highest standards of academic integrity, public engagement, and institutional service.

Susan MacManus (B.S. Political Science ’68; Ph.D. Political Science ’75)

Susan MacManus

Susan MacManus, Ph.D., is a nationally recognized political scientist and commentator whose career reflects a strong commitment to academic excellence and civic engagement. A proud two-time Florida State University graduate, she earned her bachelor’s degree in political science in 1968 and her doctorate in 1975. Dr. MacManus served as a distinguished university professor emerita at the University of South Florida.

Throughout her career, Dr. MacManus has shaped the landscape of Florida politics through scholarship, public service, and media analysis. She chaired the Florida Elections Commission from 1999 to 2003, contributed to the implementation of the Help America Vote Act, and served as a Fulbright research scholar in South Korea. Her publications include several books, among them Florida’s Minority Trailblazers and Targeting Senior Voters.

A frequent political analyst for Tampa’s NBC and ABC affiliates, Dr. MacManus is widely respected for her insights on generational trends and statewide political dynamics. Her lifelong dedication to civic discourse, public service, and her alma mater continues to leave a lasting imprint on the Florida State community.
