Apply for FSU’s Global Citizenship Certificate (GCC) by attending one of the information sessions hosted by the Center for Global Engagement every week at The Globe or by signing up for an individual advising session.
By engaging in a combination of academic coursework and intercultural experiences, students gain intercultural communication skills and develop a deeper knowledge of global issues.
“In an era where the global job market demands more than just academic prowess, the Global Citizenship Certificate stands as a beacon of comprehensive preparation,” Bryant E. Harden, Ph.D., GCC Program Director and Teaching Faculty said. “The required Global Perspectives course and the extensive selection of cross-cultural electives serve as the foundation for cultivating cross-cultural communication skills. Beyond the classroom, our program sets itself apart with a unique blend of intercultural events—social, cultural, experiential, and educational. Through these events and a sustained international or domestic experience, students not only accrue academic knowledge but also develop the practical, real-world skills that employers prioritize. Our graduates emerge not only as degree holders but as global citizens ready to navigate the complexities of our interconnected world.”
Enrolled students must take Global Perspectives, the certificate’s required course that explores global issues and helps build intercultural competencies; choose three elective courses from an approved list of 500+ courses; attend eight intercultural events; and complete one sustained intercultural experience domestically or abroad.
The Global Citizenship Certificate program, preceded by Global Pathways, was founded in 2016 and currently has 228 graduates, with another 17 students graduating in Fall 2023.
“This journey has been nothing short of transformative, shaping not only my perspective on the world but also fostering personal growth,” said Emma Gurdus (B.S. Marketing, B.S. International Affairs ‘24), who is graduating from the GCC program this fall.
“I have learned through this program that it’s not what you read in a textbook but rather about the experiences. The main takeaway I have, as I believe many of you would agree, is that you must put yourself out there; to not be afraid to talk to someone you don’t know, to not be afraid to go to an event alone, and most importantly, to not be closed-minded. As global citizens, we are not just passive observers of the world; we are active participants in shaping its future.”
Students also have the opportunity to graduate from GCC with honors, which is open to all students, and helps to provide non-honors students with an opportunity for an enriched honors learning experience.
Congratulations to this year’s GCC graduates!
