Degree Requirements

CORE coursework (7 credits):

  • INR 5935: Colloquium (1)
  • INR 5012: Globalism (3)
  • INR 5938: IA Seminar (3)
  • Careers in IA (code to be added later) (0)

RUSSIAN OR EASTERN EUROPEAN (REES) HISTORY coursework (6 credits):

  • At least six (6) credits focusing on REES History

AREA-SPECIFIC coursework (12 credits)

  • Participating departments: International Affairs, Political Science, Public Administration, Economics, Sociology, Urban and Regional Planning, Geography, History, Religion, and Modern Languages

Approved IA ELECTIVE coursework (6 credits):

  • The remaining credits left for the degree will be taken from the approved course list, from the participating departments.
  • Students may also study abroad, or complete internships for credit – to complete their remaining elective hours. For info on study abroad programs, click here.

PASS COMPREHENSIVE EXAM, COMPLETE A DIR, OR SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND THESIS

FOREIGN LANGUAGE requirement: Russian, Ukrainian, or some other approved Eastern European language

  • Coursework through the 2000 level, including CLEP. (i.e. SPN 2220, FRE 2220, GRE 2220)
  • Above intermediate level on the FSU Placement exam (Min scores: Spanish (46), French (48) German (44))
  • 12 semester hours in a single foreign language, with an average grade of at least 3.0
  • 4 years of a single language in high school
  • Passing the Graduate Reading Knowledge Exam (GER 5069, ITA 5069, POR 5069, RUS 5069, SPN 5069)
  • If the first language is not English: minimum scores on TOEFL (80) or IELTS (6.5)
