Join Us for Brunch and Brushstrokes: Summer 2024 Opening Minds Through Art Gallery

Join Florida State University’s Claude Pepper Center (CPC) for “Brunch and Brushstrokes: Summer Opening Minds Through Art Gallery” on Friday, June 21, at 10 am on campus in the Pepper Building (636 W Call St #1124, Tallahassee, FL 32306).

Opening Minds through Art at Florida State University (FSU-OMA) is an intergenerational art program that pairs FSU students and people living with dementia to form one-on-one relationships.

OMA promotes the autonomy and dignity of its older adult participants through creative expression and “no-fail” abstract art-making. The program also encourages students to connect with older adults, with the goal of reducing ageism and encouraging interest in geriatric-focused careers.

CPC first launched FSU-OMA in Fall 2023, providing immersive training and learning for nearly 50 students in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, FSU Law students participating in the Claude Pepper Elder Law Clinic, FSU College of Medicine, and the College of Arts and Sciences (Psychology).

Each week, the summer interns work with two different older adults with dementia to complete a beautiful abstract art piece. OMA promotes the autonomy and dignity of its older adult participants through creative expression and “no-fail” abstract artmaking. The program also encourages students to connect with older adults, with the goal of reducing ageism and encouraging interest in geriatric-focused careers.

The art show will begin at 10 am with a brief presentation in the Broad Auditorium, and then you are welcome to stay to enjoy brunch and stroll through the art gallery.
