Join the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy’s Department of Sociology and the Challenger Learning Center for the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop Celebration showcase on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 6-9 p.m., in the Challenger Learning Center.
The free event is open to the public. Due to limited seating, attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as admission is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Lisa Munson, Ph.D., Teaching Professor in FSU’s Department of Sociology and author of the “Sociology of Hip Hop Culture” will host the event.
The celebration will include a premiere screening of the new documentary Mixtape, released in August 2023. The documentary takes the audience on a journey through the underground origins of Hip Hop with insights from legends such as Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, KRS-One, DJ Khaled, 2 Chainz, DJ Clue, N.O.R.E., and more.
Following the documentary screening is a hip-hop showcase featuring local artists, including Tokyo Extraordinaire, Artisan P, Buster Wolf, Da Beast, and Mvtha Cvla.
The DJ for this special night is none other than Tallahassee’s own DJ DEMP – a legend in hip hop who has spun tracks for some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Luke, Trick Daddy, Lil Flip, David Banner, Trina, and Juvenile. DJ DEMP’s dedication and commitment to the community were recognized when he was awarded the key to the City of Tallahassee in January 2023.
