The Florida State University Master’s in Applied Economics program (MAEP) held it’s annual Summer Symposium on Friday, July 28.
Members of the Tallahassee community, FSU faculty members and MAEP alumni from as far as Washington gathered in the Augustus B. Turnbull Conference Center as the program’s 2023 cohort presented their capstone projects.
The students, working in groups of three to four, act as analysts for a mock consulting firm and research a given topic or issue. It provides the students the chance to meet with key stakeholders and refine their data analysis and networking skills.
“The summer symposium is an event that allows the students to demonstrate what they’ve learned throughout the one-year program,” MAEP director Katie Sherron, Ph.D., said. “They grow and develop in their economics, data analysis, and presentation skills. It’s a time to celebrate everything they’ve accomplished and a springboard into their professional careers.”
Each group gave a 15-minute presentation, that was followed up by a 15-minute question and answer session where the audience asked any questions relating to the presentation’s topic.
At the end, the audience acted as judges, voting for the Best Applied Project Award. This year’s winners were Noah Dankner, Katelyn Greer, and Ben Thompson for their “Cost Benefit Analysis of a Clean Slate Act in Florida” project.
Hannah Ransom, Katelyn Greer, Peter Politano, Samantha Satizabal-Prieto, and Caroline Stevens were all honored with Outstanding Student Awards.
Alli Kope (M.S. Applied Economics ’19) was awarded with Alum of the Year for beginning an alumni mentorship program.
The event also doubled as a celebration, marking the completion of the year-long program for the 2023 cohort.
The terminal master’s program offers students a number of hands-on learning experience, teaching them how economic theory is applied to data and consulting projects in the labor force. In recent years, the program has seen a 90 percent job placement rate for graduates.
