Patricia Homan Named as Raymond Flavious Bellamy Chair in Population Studies

FSU’s College of Social Sciences and Public Policy (COSSPP) is proud to announce the appointment of Patricia Homan, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology, as the Raymond Flavious Bellamy Chair in Population Studies, effective May 1, 2025, recognizing her excellent teaching and prominent scholarship.

In addition to her role as an associate professor, Dr. Homan also serves as director of research and strategic initiatives for FSU’s Public Health Program, a faculty associate for the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy, and a faculty member for the Center for Demography and Population Health.

This appointment will last until 2030, with the possibility of renewal. The professorship provides additional funding to support Dr. Homan’s teaching, research, and student-support activities.

“It is a joy to name Dr. Patricia Homan as the inaugural Raymond Flavious Bellamy Chair in Population Studies, as her scholarship and character reflect wonderfully the legacy of Founding Sociology Chairperson Dr. Bellamy,” said Dean Tim Chapin, Ph.D. “Dr. Homan is a world-class and award-winning scholar, and has clearly established herself as one of the finest scholars of population health and aging in the nation.”

Dr. Homan joined the COSSPP faculty in 2018 after earning her doctorate in sociology from Duke University.

“I am deeply grateful for this generous endowment and the invaluable opportunities it offers to further my career and to support the outstanding students we have here at Florida State University,” Dr. Homan said. “Above all, I am truly honored to carry forward the remarkable legacy of Dr. Raymond Flavious Bellamy, the first chair of Sociology at FSU, whose distinguished career in research, teaching, and service continues to inspire us.”

Outside of FSU, Dr. Homan is a visiting scholar at Brown University’s Population Studies Training Center, Harvard University’s GenderSci Lab, and Pennsylvania State University’s Population Research Institute.

Dr. Homan’s research has also won numerous awards, including the 2024 Milbank Quarterly Early Career Award in Population Health from the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science, the 2022 Matilda White Riley Early Stage Investigator Award from the National Institute of Health, the 2022 Early Career Gender Scholar Award from Sociologists for Women in Society South, the 2021 Sociology of Sex & Gender Distinguished Article Award from the American Sociological Association (ASA), and the 2019 Roberta G. Simmons Outstanding Dissertation Award from the ASA Medical Sociology Section.
