Biography
Professor William Weissert taught at FSU from 2003 to 2021.
Professor Weissert’s research on health politics and policy deals with the cost and effectiveness of home care services for elderly people and payment incentives on health care quality and patient outcomes; predictors of health care use, discharges, and outcomes in elderly populations; and prevalence and incidence of chronic conditions and impairments. His work translated to public policy changes in nursing home payment systems, Medicare and Medicaid service coverage and budget decisions, and strategies to improve performance. With his wife Carol he sought to explain how health policy emerged from Congress, the executive branch, and state governments. Their book, Governing Health: The Politics of Health Policy, is in its fifth edition. His research has been cited by fellow scholars nearly 53,000 times. Before coming to Florida State in 2003, he was professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and before that professor at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health. At Florida State, he directed the Masters in Public Health program.
