Political Science Student Chloe Wain Wins Marion Jewell Hay Award

Chloe Wain – a fourth-year Political Science major – was awarded the Marion Jewell Hay Award by Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Chapter of Florida in recognition of her outstanding academic record and excellence in research.

Phi Beta Kappa is the country’s oldest and most prestigious honors society, with only 7.5% of juniors and 10% of seniors invited to join. The Marion Jewell Hay Award recognizes the top student graduating from Florida State University each semester.

Chair of the Political Science Department Brad Gomez, Ph.D., shared that Wain’s academic accomplishments are just the start.

“Beyond her academic accomplishments, Chloe’s commitment to public service and advocacy is truly inspiring,” Dr. Gomez said. “Through her legal internships with organizations such as the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia and the 2nd Judicial Circuit Office of the Public Defender, she has demonstrated a deep commitment to justice and social equity.”

Wain has shown outstanding leadership skills as an Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program Leader, Leadership Engagement Specialist at Alpha Delta Pi, and various other involvements on campus.

Her research endeavors have also uncovered important inequities as she delved into systemic injustices pervading the greater Tallahassee area. She has presented her research at the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference, the Undergraduate Research Symposium, and the Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium. Her work on Public Use in eminent domain cases in Florida has also been published in The Medallion.

Wain has also completed several policy and research-based internships, including at Florida State University’s Center for the Advancement of Human Rights, FSU’s Devoe L. Moore Center, and the Public Defender’s Office in Washington, D.C.

Post graduation, Wain aspires to attend law school and become a public defender.
