Degrees
Students may earn a bachelor of arts (BA) or a bachelor of science (BS) degree in sociology. Students who plan to earn the B.A. degree must complete both a foreign language through the intermediate (2200 or equivalent) level and nine additional hours in the fields of history and humanities.
Major in Sociology
Students must complete thirty (30) semester hours in sociology, with a grade of “C-” or better in each course, including: SYA 4010 (Sociological Theory), SYA 4300 (Methods of Research), SYA 4400 (Social Statistics); and any other seven sociology courses beginning with the prefixes SYA, SYD, SYG, SYO, SYP and limited IDS courses. Students who major in sociology must also complete a minor in an approved department or program. All students including transfer students must earn a minimum of fifteen (15) semester hours in sociology at Florida State University. Transfer of sociology courses are subject to the approval of the department. Please refer to Sociology’s academic map for map milestone that must be met on a term-by-term basis.
Minor in Sociology
A minor may be earned by completing any fifteen (15) semester hours in sociology with a grade of “C-” or better in each course. At least nine (9) of the fifteen (15) semester hours must be completed at Florida State University.
