Undergraduate Program Overview

The Department of Sociology at FSU is home to over 20 dedicated faculty members who explore a wide range of topics—from population trends, health, and aging to family dynamics, education, the workplace, and positive social change. Our respected undergraduate and graduate programs are recognized for excellence both nationally and across the South. If you’re interested in our courses or becoming a major, we’d be glad to speak with you.

Our undergraduate program is built around five major areas: Social Organization; Personality and Society; Population and Human Ecology; Social Analysis; and the Family. Undergraduate students can conduct Directed Individual Study projects with particular faculty and an Honors Program is open to qualified students.

The Sociology major consists of thirty semester hours. Sociology majors are required to complete the following courses with a grade of C- or better: Sociological Theory (SYA 4010), Methods of Social Research (SYA 4300), and Social Statistics (SYA 4400).  The remaining 21 credit hours are chosen from SYA, SYD, SYG, SYO, SYP and limited IDS courses. A minor in Sociology requires fifteen hours. Both bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees are offered.

Please contact the College’s Undergraduate Advising Office or Dr. Teresa Roach (troach@fsu.edu) with any questions or for further information.
