Students Gain Career Insights at Spring 2025 MAEP Career Day

Students, alumni, and industry professionals gathered for FSU’s Master’s in Applied Economics Program (MAEP) Spring Career Day on March 28, 2025.

MAEP Career Day is held every Fall and Spring Semester to help MAEP students in their professional development. Students learn more about careers in economics and meet alumni and recruiters from esteemed companies.

The event began with lunch, where attendees introduced themselves and learned more about each other. The alumni panel followed, and attendees heard from MAEP alumni Krista Lape Chechanover (‘18), Jimmy Heckman (‘15), and Olivia Schueth (‘24).

Krista Lape Chechanover, Consulting Associate at Charles River Associates, addressed current MAEP students in her talk. She provided insights into her current position and gave advice on career development. Lape Chechanover also discussed how MAEP gave her the tools to succeed in her career, including alumni connections and experience with teamwork, organization, communication, and programming.

Jimmy Heckman, Chief of Workforce Statistics and Economic Research at the Florida Department of Commerce, spoke about what his current role entails. He explained what research his bureau conducts and how it informs economic decision making. Heckman also talked to attendees about his career trajectory and his path to becoming Chief of the Bureau.

Olivia Schueth, Risk Control Analyst at The Energy Authority, discussed the history of the energy industry and how a knowledge of economics is beneficial to those in the field. She explained the roles available to economists at The Energy Authority and encouraged MAEP students to explore them.

Following the Alumni Panel, MAEP students broke out into mock interviews with professionals, including MAEP alumni. These interviews provide students with interviewing skills, setting them up for career success.

At the networking reception at Proof in FSU’s Student Union, MAEP students were able to build connections with established professionals in economics. After leaving MAEP Career Day, students are well-equipped to begin their careers upon graduating from the program.
