Alumni Spotlight: Janet Hartman

Janet Hartman – an FSU alumna (B.S. Interdisciplinary Social Science ’21, M.S. Criminology ’23) – was appointed executive director of the Florida Public Safety Institute (FPSI) at Tallahassee State College.

Hartman is committed to advancing training, development, and innovation in the field of public safety including law enforcement, corrections, firefighting, and emergency management.

Success Through COSSPP Specialized Faculty Professional Development Fund: Doug Norton, Ph.D.

Doug Norton, Ph.D., specialized faculty in the Department of Economics and director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) program at Florida State University, attended the week-long Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) Graduate Workshop at Chapman University this past June with the support of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy’s (COSSPP) Specialized Faculty Professional Development Program.

Student Spotlight: Chris Carlberg

Chris Carlberg – Ph.D. student in FSU’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) and two-time FSU alumnus – was announced as a 2026 Community Catalyst with the Knight Creative Community Institute (KCCI) in Tallahassee, FL.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to enhance the sense of place in these Tallahassee neighborhoods, especially around schools,” Carlberg said. “Being able to bridge my passion for planning, placemaking, and urban design with enhancing the lives of young people in these neighborhoods feels very full circle for me.”
