CDPH Master’s Student Awarded 2024 Serow Prize

Jalen White, a student in the Center for Demography and Population Health’s (CDPH) Master of Science in Demography (MSD) program, was recently awarded the Serow Prize in honor of his outstanding performance in the program and high potential for continued success in applied demography.

Matthew Brooks, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Sociology at Florida State University, co-authored “Are Rural Areas Holdouts in the Second Demographic Transition? Evidence From Canada and the United States,” published in the journal Demography. Dr. Brooks worked alongside Shelley Clark, Ph.D., a Professor of Sociology at McGill University; Rachel Margolis, Ph.D., a Professor of Sociology at Western University; and Ann-Marie Helou, a doctoral student at McGill University. Distinguished Economics and Demography Professor Retires After 34 Years of Service

Distinguished Economics Professor Carl P. Schmertmann, Ph.D., will retire after the Spring 2024 semester following over 34 years of service at Florida State University.  

Dr. Schmertmann has held the title of William J. Serow Professor of Economics since 1999. This Endowed Professorship honors William J. Serow, Ph.D., a Professor of Economics at Florida State University from 1981 until his untimely death in 2003; he served as the CDPH’s Director from 1990 to 2003 and dedicated an important part of his professional life to the preparation of students for careers in applied demography.

Four COSSPP Students Receive Sustainability Fellowships

Four College of Social Science and Public Policy students were selected as Sustainability Fellows through Florida State Sustainable Campus to partner with Tallahassee-based organizations that address challenges related to environmental, social and/or economic sustainability.

They will be recognized at the Fellows Poster Session on April 22 from 4 to 6:30 pm in the Student Services Building, Room 214.

2024 Charles B. Nam Lecture in the Sociology of Population Brings CDPH Community Together

The Annual Charles B. Nam Lecture in the Sociology of Population, hosted on Friday, March 8, brought the Center for Demography and Population Health (CDPH) community together to hear from Jennifer Montez, Ph.D., a Sociology Professor from Syracuse University on the topic, “U.S. States and Population Health: What Do We Know and Where Do We Go From Here?”
