Distinguished Economics and Demography Professor Retires After 34 Years of Service

Distinguished Economics Professor Carl P. Schmertmann, Ph.D., will retire after the Spring 2024 semester following over 34 years of service at Florida State University.  

Dr. Schmertmann has held the title of William J. Serow Professor of Economics since 1999. This Endowed Professorship honors William J. Serow, Ph.D., a Professor of Economics at Florida State University from 1981 until his untimely death in 2003; he served as the CDPH’s Director from 1990 to 2003 and dedicated an important part of his professional life to the preparation of students for careers in applied demography.

Associate Economics Professor Retires After 36 Years of Service 

Associate Professor of Economics Paul Beaumont, Ph.D., will retire in Spring 2024 after 36 years of service at Florida State University. Since joining FSU, Dr. Beaumont has taught Economics to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. He’s also aided the Department of Mathematics as a Courtesy Professor.

Two COSSPP Faculty Win University Teaching Awards

Two professors from the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy won Florida State 2023-2024 University Teaching Awards. 

Alexandra Cockerham, Ph.D. and Katie Sherron, Ph.D. will be honored at FSU’s Faculty Awards Celebration on April 23, 2024. 

The University Teaching Awards recognize multi-faceted teaching excellence, including serving as a positive role model to students, imparting a respect for truth and a love of learning, challenging students’ thinking and assumptions, demonstrating respect for all persons, and employing innovative instructional techniques.

Stavros Center and Robinhood Money Drills Celebrate Partnership at Launch Event

Florida State University’s Gus A. Stavros Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Economic Education hosted a celebration of its partnership with Robinhood Money Drills on Tuesday, February 27. The event was attended by FSU leaders, Stavros Center volunteers and employees, students, and executives from Robinhood.
