The College of Social Sciences & Public Policy’s International Affairs Program & the Broad Lectureship on International Affairs present Guest lecture by Steve Gonyea Retired Foreign Service Officer U.S. Agency for International Government Thursday, September 25 | 4 – 5:30 pm Broad Auditorium Pepper Center Building (PCB) This lecture explores the complex interplay between foreign aid, international development, and the exercise of soft power in global affairs. Drawing on more than 25 years of overseas service with USAID and Peace Corps, Stephen Gonyea brings firsthand experience from conflict and post-conflict environments including Central and Eastern Europe, Afghanistan, Jordan, and the Balkans. The lecture examines how U.S. assistance programs serve both humanitarian and strategic objectives, highlighting the challenges and opportunities of aligning development goals with broader foreign policy interests.
