Urban and Regional Planning Students Hear Insights from Mayor Dailey on City Leadership and Development

Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey visited Florida State University’s URP 4022: Collective Decision-Making class to discuss public health, city planning, and to answer students’ questions on urban issues.

URP 4022 – Collective Decision-Making is a core course for the undergraduate minor in Planning Studies and a required option within the Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Pathway in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP).

This course serves as an introduction to planning as a tool for collective decision-making, emphasizing the often-competing priorities of efficiency, equity, and environmental quality in shaping public policy and community outcomes.

“Mayor John Dailey, an alumnus of COSSPP, continues to be a dear friend of the college. My urban planning students are always captivated by his engaging, behind-the-scenes take on collective decision-making and how urban planning outcomes are achieved in practice,” said Chris Coutts, Ph.D., professor of urban and regional planning, who teaches URP 4022. “My students are often surprised to learn that Tallahassee is, in many ways, ahead of the curve in working towards sustainable development.”

John Dailey has maintained a longstanding connection with FSU, where he earned a B.S. in Political Science in 1996 and a Master of Public Administration in 1999 from the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy (COSSPP). He was named one of COSSPP’s Distinguished Alumni of the Class of 2024-2025.

Dailey went on to build a successful career in public service, serving two terms as Chairman of the Leon County Commission before being elected Mayor of Tallahassee in 2018.

In 2024, he was honored as a member of the COSSPP Distinguished Alumni Class in recognition of his achievements and continued engagement with the university.
