The World Affairs Program (WAP) at FSU wrapped up an exciting 2022-2023 school year. Delegates won 63 individual awards and took home five delegation awards, resulting in Florida State’s #10 ranking in North America for the Fall 2022 semester, surpassing all teams from Ivy Leagues and other Florida universities.
WAP is an academic debate team providing training in negotiation and debate strategies, as well as the opportunity to develop leadership and problem-solving skills by engaging with experts on topical global affairs and in debate competitions nationwide.
“All of this was accomplished through hard work and dedication by our delegates, and under the tireless and capable leadership of our outgoing Director Ryan Villacorta,” said the incoming Director Bailey Vandewalle. “I hope to carry on Ryan’s vision and drive to set us up for continued success going into WAP’s 38th year.”
This year the World Affairs Program saw massive success both on campus and across the country, traveling to nine cities across North America. The program grew significantly, as their new member class this year was one of the largest the program has seen in recent history.
In the Fall, the WAP team traveled to Tuscaloosa, Boston, Washington D.C., and Chapel Hill to compete amongst some of the best delegates in the country.
The team, consisting mostly of new members, displayed their skills and preparation at the University of Alabama’s AIRMUNC, marking their first conference of the year. FSU World Affairs swept the competition and gaveled every committee but one, taking home fifteen awards in total.
The team also attended BarMUN in Boston, NCSC in Washington, D.C., and UNCMUNC in Chapel Hill, bringing home a total of twenty-seven awards for FSU in the Fall.
This February, FSU World Affairs hosted its second iteration of NoleMUN, an internationally ranked collegiate conference. The second iteration of the conference shattered its previous attendance record, with teams traveling from across the country to participate.
In Spring, delegates traveled to Montreal, San Francisco, Atlanta, Charlottesville, Chicago, and Williamsburg, winning 36 awards in total including three Best Delegation awards.
